The Society for the History of Children and Youth (SHCY) is pleased to call for nominations for the Fass-Sandin Prize for the best article in English on the history of children, childhood, or youth (broadly construed) published in 2013 in a print or online journal.

Author Interview

Stuart Henderson, author of Making the Scene: Yorkville and Hip Toronto in the 1960s was recently interview by New Books in History about the youth movement in 1960s Yorkville. Making the Scene was the recipient of the 2012 Champlain Society's Chalmer's Award in Ontario History and the 2012 Clio Prize (Ontario) awarded by the Canadian Historical Association.

Special Education History wins Dissertation Prize

Congratulations to HCYG co-chair Jason Ellis for winning the 2012 Cathy James Memorial Dissertation Prize at the CHEA biennial meeting in Vancouver. Ellis's thesis written in the History Department at York University is entitled, "“‘Backward and Brilliant Children’: A Social and Policy History of Disability, Childhood, and Education in Toronto’s Special Education Classes, 1910 to 1945.”

Strong-Boag's Fostering Nation Honoured

Veronica Strong-Boag has won the 2012 Canada Prize (Social Sciences) for her book Fostering Nation? Canada Confronts Its History of Childhood Disadvantage (WLU Press, 2011). Considered a “benchmark for outstanding scholarly work,” the Canada Prize, worth $2,500 in each category, is awarded annually by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS).
